Imagine a private cul-de-sac with sweeping desert and mountain views a short drive from Palm Springs and a private airstrip around the corner. This is the locale of the Rock Hudson Desert Getaway, while the home is no longer surrounded by open desert, it is still a private and quiet community of six homes located within the Bermuda Dunes Country Club on Stardust Place.
Built in 1958, this mid-century modern post and beam construction home has exposed beamed ceilings and a rock feature fireplace in the open plan living area. The living space is flanked, both poolside and at the entry, with walls of glass and clerestory windows. Original details from Rock Hudson’s time include the large front door with green glass handles and a roadrunner etched into the glass window. “H” gates mark the entrance to a citrus grove and side yard.
A quirky detail of Hudson’s is the window set an an angle next to the pool – an inside joke of some kind – it has no function other than as a party tale to share with friends.
Not to be outdone with dramatic detail. The present owner’s have left their unique touch on the property by creating an outdoor “Tiki Paradise.” Purchasing the lot behind the home, they built an outdoor kitchen and dining gazebo surrounded by a koi pond, a putting green with tiki hut and totem pole alongside, a tiki bar with island decor and of course a pirate ship with seating nearby. This is a playground in which both adults and kids would love to make memories.
Making Memories at the Rock Hudson Desert Getaway
This summer Matthew Reader and Paul Kaplan of the Paul Kaplan Group hosted a “3 Hour Tour” party at the home for clients, friends and colleagues. Greeting our guests with leis in Palm Springs we then ferried them aboard our two “Minnows” to the party to preview the home. Although it was the hottest evening of the summer everyone enjoyed shaved ice, shrimp skewers, pulled pork sliders and other tasty cool treats. Hula and Polynesian fire dancers entertained us and watching our coworkers in the hula contest made us laugh. It was a great way to showcase this special home and a great time was had by all.
For more information on this special property or others contact Matthew Reader at 760-969-2278.

Sunnylands, one of the Palm Springs area’s special gifts, welcomes President Obama and President Xi Jinping this weekend for a casual summit.
President Obama is the first president to visit The Annenberg Retreat at Sunnylands. The estate was long a getaway for presidents during the Annenberg’s lifetime, where they created an atmosphere of relaxation, contemplation and camaraderie for their guests. Since the passing of the Annenbergs, Sunnylands has been restored and reopened as The Annenberg Retreat at Sunnylands, a retreat center for leaders to meet, negotiate and make progress on the important issues of the day. Walter and Leonore Annenberg wanted the important work created in the intimacy of Sunnylands to endure and continue past their lifetimes and have given this desert gift to the American people.
A Sunnylands Field Trip
Where the Sun Shines Bright on Design even on the cloudiest of days.
This winter the Paul Kaplan Group and friends took a modernism field trip to Sunnylands in Rancho Mirage. Just opened this year for tours of the estate and grounds, our group had a wonderful day filled with architecture, art, history, gardens and a great lunch at the Center’s cafe.
It was a rare gray and cloudy day in our desert but Sunnylands’ mid-century design allowed the homes’ interiors to be bathed in natural light with panoramic views of the clouds hugging the mountains beyond.
Modernism at Sunnylands
Designed by architect A. Quincy Jones in the 1960′s Sunnylands was built as a vacation retreat for Ambassadors Walter and Leonore Annenberg. The home, a mid-century modern pink-roofed pavilion, hovers above the pool, golf course and landscape beyond. Its wide overhangs protect the home from direct sun and create large covered terraces for outdoor living. Long walls of glass frame the cactus and rose gardens. The home’s large open spaces, lava rock walls, high coffered ceilings, custom designed mid-century furniture, window treatments and upholstery all succeed in highlighting not only the incredible views but also the Annenberg’s art collection rather than competing with it. And what a collection it is from Impressionist and Post Impressionist paintings, to sculpture, to Chinese cloisonné, to Steuben glass and much more. This is an elegant but casual desert home.
The Sunnylands estate is open for tours of the home and its grounds. Tickets may be purchased online. The adjacent Sunnylands Center is free and open to the public Thursdays through Sundays, September through June. The Center has changing exhibits, a cafe, a beautiful 9 acre desert garden planted to resemble an Impressionist painting and is the location for the many events sponsored by the Sunnylands Center. Tickets for the home tour will go on sale again August 15. Check their website for upcoming events or like the Center’s Facebook page for more info on happenings at Sunnylands.
Come back often and we’ll share other Paul Kaplan Group field trips.

Are you planning to visit Palm Springs this February for Modernism Week? All of us at The Paul Kaplan Group have already purchased our tickets. Although many of the events and tours are sold out, I looked and there are still a variety of tickets available.
What is Modernism Week? Palm Springs Modernism Week is an exciting 11-day celebration of mid-century modern design, architecture and culture, Feb. 14 to the 24th. This design aesthetic originated in the 1940s, 50s, and 60s, and was typified by clean, simple lines which came to define desert modernism. The Palm Springs Modernism Week is filled with a variety of events including architectural tours, films, lectures, an architectural symposium, educational events, and chic, fun parties in cool mid-century modern homes that draws thousands of visitors from all over the world.
The Paul Kaplan Group is sponsoring a number of events and tours, as well as our Modernism Garage Sale on Feb. 24th. I’ve scanned through the event lists, and of what is still available, here’s what I would suggest:
13th Annual Modernism Show Preview Reception, and show the following days.
Marrakesh Country Club Designer Showcase
Expo Tent and Prefab Showcase
Charles Phoenix Retro Slide Show

This lecture and tour by the Palm Springs Art Museum about the Mid-Century Modern Racquet Club Garden Villas is a great opportunity this coming weekend to get a peek at the villas designed by William Cody and built by Paul Trousdale. Originally part of the famous Racquet Club, the villas were intended to give guests privacy but easy access to resort activities.
A Desert Oasis at the Mid-Century Modern Racquet Club Garden Villas
Lushly landscaped by Philip A. Shipley, landscape architect to celebrities such as Walt Disney, Frank Sinatra and Steven Spielberg, the complex boasts a babbling brook, amazing views, beautiful pool and mature plantings that have created an oasis in the desert at the Mid-Century Modern Racquet Club Garden Villas.
Its Biker Weekend in Palm Springs, but why not ride your hog up to the Palm Springs high desert for the 2012 Hwy 62 Art Tours?
A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE ART TOURS
Conceived in 2001 as a festival for all the arts, with 24 participating artists, the Hwy 62 Art Tours now features close to 200, including those working in music, literary, performance and visual arts.
“Open Studios” are still the main feature. A steadily growing number of artists open their homes and studios to an ever-expanding public. Each reflects the unlikely growth of the arts in this remote Palm Springs high desert community.
Along with the growing Art Tours, this past decade has seen the rise of a thriving arts community, where cultural events occur year-round. Hwy 62 Art Tours is the premiere arts event of the year in this unique place, when the local community welcomes the world to have a look.
