365 Days in Palm Springs: Melvyn’s Ingleside Inn

Friday, June 17th, 2011

Want to party like it’s 1959? Or 1949? Or 1939? Be sure to check out Melvyn’s Ingleside Inn.. While many Eastern Inns claim that George Washington slept here, Melvyn’s claim to fame is that Greta Garbo slept here. If you crave smoked mirrors, a Manhattan or a Sidecar, and a whirl around a dance floor, this is just the place for you. Even the menu is a throwback- calories? What are calories? Order Oysters Rockefeller; Both Steak Diane and a Caesar Salad, are prepared tableside in a dining room that looks like the set of the Dinah Shore Show. Whoop it up, this is the same venue where Frank Sinatra celebrated his wedding to Barbara! Melvyn’s is located at the corner of Ramon and Belardo. Be sure to dress to the nines, or you’ll feel out of place!

Linda keeps the atmosphere light, filling the space with her energy, her enormous sunglasses, and her flamboyant style. She has a way with Judy Garland tunes! Be sure to get there early so you can focus on the game and not be distracted by the great food!

Unique architecture, which contributes to Palm Springs being the Mecca for mid-century design.  The Park Imperial South was a popular sold-out tour during Modernism Week 2011.

Palm Springs Modernism Week

Architecture

By Emma O’Kelly

Fifteen years ago, when the design cognoscenti descended on Palm Springs, cleared away the tumbleweeds and started to renovate the 1950s houses beneath them, they created a mini modernist revival. The culmination of their efforts is Palm Springs Modernism Week, (17-27 Feb), a small but growing festival of exhibitions, tours, lectures, films and parties. For ten days, a discerning, in-the-know crowd flocks to the desert town to sneak a peek at iconic and rarely-seen homes, courtesy of benevolent owners, sip cocktails at exclusive soirees and snap up mid-century finds in quirky shops and galleries – all to a backdrop of Rat Pack tunes, sunshine and retro vibes.

Have you seen any articles on Palm Springs?  If so, thanks for forwarding them to me, so I can share with our readers.

Here’s some of my fav’s:

Cows hanging out… what’s not to love!?!?

I’m pretty sure we had this print in our Kitchen growing up…..

Marimekko’s Kaivo, originally issued in 1964, is available in three colorways, including this one in brown (above), as well as others in red-black-white and black-and-white

Marimekko cotton fabrics are created by some of Finland’s top designers. Designed by the likes of Maija Isola and Maija Louekari, these fabrics are works of art in their own right.

Featuring a wonderful and surprising range of colors and patterns, these fabrics are sure to inspire your creative side.
