Private Zen: A Backyard Bathhouse

Tuesday, April 8th, 2014

Californians are known for their desire for privacy and here in Palm Springs, we aren’t any different. Small fortunes are spent to create backyard paradises and to subsequently construct huge walls, fences, or privacy hedges to block the world from looking in. Whether it be a lush garden, sparking pool, or fully-stocked koi pond, in essence, we are all looking for the perfect private zen space.

For Paul Kaplan Group Agent Kris Rain, personal zen means escape from the work-day world. It means escape from an always-on-the-go job. So whenever possible, Kris escapes to her private zen space: A custom built backyard bathhouse.

When Kris came across a vintage claw foot tub (an extreme rarity in the desert), she decided to put it to good use. She immediately called her contractor and began work on a detached bath conveniently located just steps outside her back door. Of course, the bath tub is the focal point of the room.

Lots of windows and a rustic feel make the tiny structure warm and comfortable. According to Kris, the best way to utilize the tub is to be surrounded by candles. “I created the bath house as a sanctuary where I can go to be nurtured and recharged, its a place to go to count my blessings. I always walk out feeling as if I have just been hugged,” Kris said.

If you have a personal space for private zen then we here at The Paul Kaplan Group would love to hear about it and maybe we could even share the idea on our blog. If you would like more info on how to create your own backyard bathhouse, then contact Kris Rain at The Paul Kaplan Group.

Monday, April 7th, 2014

Palm Springs Real Estate

Last Wednesday night at the regular session of the Palm Springs City Council, The Paul Kaplan Group’s John Murasky was given a certificate of appreciation by Mayor Steve Pougnet for his artwork contribution to promote Village Fest. John’s artwork appears on the latest poster promoting the weekly Thursday night event on Palm Canyon Drive.

Murasky studied at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena where he received a degree in illustration. From there he went on to a career creating and animating motion graphics for television working at ABC, FOX, and CBS. Murasky created promotional graphics for various television shows including The X-Files, The Simpsons, Twin Peaks, Everybody Loves Raymond, and Survivor.

John has always loved to draw. Growing up, he loved Hanna Barbera cartoons, Harvey comics, and Disney animated films and those continue to influence him. Murasky said that another influence was the advertising of his childhood. Murasky’s artwork is available at select Palm Springs stores.

As the Murasky poster illustrates, every Thursday evening, Downtown Palm Springs transforms into the Palm Springs VillageFest. At the VillageFest, visitors experience a diverse array of artists, artisans, entertainers, and purveyors of fresh fruits and veggies, flowers, jewelry, snacks and sweets in addition to all the great shops, restaurants, clubs, and entertainment venues located along World Famous Palm Canyon Drive.

Palm Springs Approves Plans for $80 Million Hotel/Retail Project

Thursday, April 3rd, 2014

Is this the return of Port Lawrence? At last night’s city council meeting plans were approved for the construction of an $80 Million hotel and mixed retail project on the corner of Alejo Road and North Palm Canyon. This was once the site of the ambitious Port Lawrence project which succumbed to the most recent recession.

Palm Springs Real Estate

The original Port Lawrence design included 118 residences but no hotel project.

In a report in today’s Desert Sun, developer Lawrence Rael states that the project is a honeycomb of retail, commercial, parking and 150-room hotel plugged into a four-story complex with a maximum height of 51 feet. Real stated in that article that the hotel’s brand will be announced in a week or two and that construction could begin as soon as October or November. “The brand is fully involved in the design and the changes,” said Rael in the Desert Sun article.

The original plans revealed back in 2007 included 118 residences in a three story modern building. Those plans included retail usage as well but no hotel. There were six distinct residence styles planned: Studio Lofts, Studio/Den Lofts, Live/Work Lofts, Duplex Loft Homes, Grand Gallery Lofts, and Penthouses.   Prices advertised at the time ranged from $600,000 - $2,000,000. Current plans do not include downtown residences.

Goodbye Norma Jean: Palm Springs bids farewell to Forever Marilyn

Wednesday, March 26th, 2014

Palm Springs Modern Real Estate

Parting is such sweet sorrow but the time has come to say goodbye to the Forever Marilyn Statue in downtown Palm Springs. She’s been here almost two years and has been delighting tourists and locals alike since her arrival. Forever Marilyn quickly became an icon in the downtown environment.

However, before she’s disassembled into six pieces and shipped off to New Jersey, the city of Palm Springs, which never seems to shy away from a good cocktail party, will be hosting a farewell party for the 34,000-pound, 26-foot statue this coming Thursday night during the weekly Village Fest.

Created by artist Seward Johnson, an heir to the Johnson & Johnson legacy, the Forever Marilyn is slated to join about 150 other works by the artist in a 42-acre New Jersey park for a show set to run through the end of September. The statue originally debuted in Chicago in 2011, but her move to Palm Springs created a much bigger reception. The statue, made of stainless steel and aluminum, pays tribute to Monroe’s famous scene from the 1955 comedy “The Seven-Year Itch” in which her dress billows up as she stands over a New York City subway grate.

The goodbye party for the Forever Marilyn sculpture is scheduled from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday,  March 27, during the weekly VillageFest at Palm Canyon Drive and Tahquitz Canyon Way. A giant goodbye card to sign, cupcakes and music from Monroe films will be provided. The Desert Winds Freedom Band and the Palm Springs Gay Men’s Chorus will entertain the crowd and it has been announced that Carol Channing, the original Lorelei Lee in the Broadway production of “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes”, will also be in attendance according to P.S. Resorts, a nonprofit started by local hoteliers to promote Palm Springs tourism.

We here at The Paul Kaplan Group will be sad to see her go but we encourage everyone to share memories and photos on the official Forever Marilyn Facebook page. Photos can also be broadcast via Twitter, @PS4everMarilyn, Pinterest, @PS4everMarilyn, and Instagram, @PS4everMarilyn.

REALTORS forecast significant home price increases in California

Tuesday, March 25th, 2014

Significant Home Price Increases in California

According to the most recent REALTORS Confidence Index Survey, REALTORS believe home prices to continue to increase over the next 12 months but these prices will do so at a moderate pace according to REALTOR Magazine. The monthly survey is distributed to more than 50,000 real estate professionals asking them to for opinions on home sales, prices, and market conditions.

Although the expectation for home prices in much of the country is a slower pace, REALTORS did respond that the greatest price increases will more than likely occur in California, Alaska, Hawaii, and Florida. REALTORS predict that California home prices will increase 5 to 7 percent over the next year continuing the trend of annual significant home price increases in California.

In the same survey, REALTORS expressed concern over current market conditions holding back some buyers because of tightening credit conditions. “Access to credit was often cited as a deterrent to home buying,” according to the report in the current issue of REALTOR Magazine. “About 13 percent of REALTORS® who did not close a sale in February reported having clients who could not obtain financing.”

Although it may sound cliche, it’s time to buy before prices increase and loan availability becomes increasingly difficult. Call The Paul Kaplan Group regarding the current Palm Springs area real estate market.
