Palm Springs Art Museum Announces Fundraiser for Inaugural E. Stewart Williams Exhibit at Edwards Harris Pavilion

Wednesday, March 12th, 2014

The board of the Architecture and Design Council have planned a special evening in support of the inaugural exhibition, An Eloquent Modernist, E. Stewart Williams, Architect, at the Architecture and Design Center, Edwards Harris Pavilion. This special fundraiser is at the home, which is one of the last designs by E. Stewart Williams, of Architecture and Design Center founders David Lee and Mark Nichols on Saturday, April 5th, from 6:00p.m. to 8:00pm.

The Palm Springs Art Museum recently purchased a historic 1961 bank building in downtown Palm Springs and is in the process of rehabilitating the iconic building to create the new Palm Springs Art Museum Architecture and Design Center, Edwards Harris Pavilion.

The building, designed by renowned mid-century modern architect E. Stewart Williams, is located at 300 South Palm Canyon Drive and was originally designed to house the Santa Fe Federal Savings and Loan. The building will be devoted to architecture and design and provide a space for exhibitions and programs, and includes an archive study space. A prime example of mid-century modern design, the building will provide a space for educational programming, community projects, and a retail merchandise area for unique design objects.

When completed, the A&D Center will be the country’s first historic structure to be transformed into a free-standing architecture and design museum that is housed in a modern building. The rehabilitation is an enormous undertaking, requiring both adhering to the Secretary of the Interior Standards for alterations to this historic property and bringing the building up to current 21st century building codes.

Robust fundraising efforts to support the transformation of the building are in process and the list of Founders continues to grow. More than thirty founders have already pledged support for the process, and the museum is seeking additional founders to join this prestigious group. Only 100 founder level memberships will be offered in total.  Founders memberships are $25,000 and can be paid over three years and comes with many special museum benefits including President’s Circle membership and Architect and Design Council membership. In addition, a handful of naming opportunities still exist.

Tickets for the fundraiser are $150 and available by contacting Paul Ortega at (760) 322-4818 or [email protected].

Fashion, glamour, and dogs are in the spotlight in two separate, upcoming events this March. Both benefit local pet services and charitable organizations.

Le Chien is a Palm Springs Life event for El Paseo Fashion Week 2014 and this year’s theme is Famous Dogs of Hollywood. On Sunday, March 16th at 5:00pm, cocktails, a silent auction, music, and entertainment precede a canine fashion show featuring donors and their four-legged friends in fashions inspired by “Famous Dogs of Hollywood.” Collections by renowned doggie designers liven up the runway and put our famous canines in the spotlight. A live auction completes the evening. The show benefits the Humane Society of the Desert. Hors d’oeuvres provided courtesy of Mitch’s on El Paseo Restaurant.

The Diamonds Arf a Dog’s Best Friend Pageant takes place Saturday, March 22nd, at 1:00pm at the Palm Canyon Theatre. A benefit for Loving All Animals, Bella de Ball will host this fashion and talent show combination as one dog will be crowned Palm Springs’ most talented. Native Film Fest returns to Palm Springs for 13th season

Tuesday, March 4th, 2014

Agua Caliente Film Fest 2014 – #UW0126-1 from FNX First Nations Experience on Vimeo.

As a signature program of the Agua Caliente Cultural Museum, the Native Film Fest returns to Palm Springs today for its 13th season and runs through Saturday, March 8th. The festival presents the best in films by, about, and starring Native Americans and other Indigenous peoples from around the world. Screenings are followed by informative Q&A sessions with filmmakers, directors, and actors in attendance. All screenings are at Camelot Theatres in Palm Springs.

Opening the festival on Tuesday evening is Views on Native Film – a free lecture by Nancy Marie Mithlo, Ph.D. native Film Fest(Chiricahua Apache), Associate Professor of Art History and American Indian Studies at University of Wisconsin-Madison.  In fall 2014, Dr. Mithlo will be Chair of American Indian Studies at Autry National Center in Los Angeles.  Her lecture is entitled, Can You Hear Me?: Silence as an Indigenous Representational Strategy in Film.

Richard M. Milanovich, the late Chairman of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, was a lover of film and, each year, attended Native Film Fest. The Richard M. Milanovich Award for Distinguished Contributions to Indigenous Film established in his name honors those who have distinguished themselves by their meritorious work in Indigenous film.  The 2014 Award will be presented to Tantoo Cardinal on Saturday evening at the 8:00 screening.

An accomplished and celebrated actress, Tantoo Cardinal has advanced Aboriginal performing arts throughout the world, blazing a trail in an industry where few roles for Aboriginal women previously existed.  Among her 80-plus credits are Dances with Wolves, Black Robe, Smoke Signals, and North of 60.  Acting and speaking are only two of the many ways she contributes to society, dedicating her life to ensuring Aboriginal people, their cultures, and the historic and current issues impacting their communities are fairly represented throughout the arts. In 2010, Ms. Cardinal was inducted as a Member into the Order of Canada for her outstanding contributions.

Don’t miss this much-awaited version of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope translated into the Navajo language with English subtitles. The film will be shown on Saturday, March 8 at the 8:00 p.m. Native Film Fest screening at Camelot Theatres. This is a free screening. No tickets required. Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Sandpiper Condominiums Celebrate Historic Designation

Monday, March 3rd, 2014

Paul Kaplan Palm Springs Modern Real Estate Group

This past Sunday,  the Homeowners Association of Sandpiper Circles 11 and 12 invited the Palm Springs Preservation Foundation membership to celebrate their complex’s recent historic designation by the city of Palm Desert. A dedication ceremony took place poolside at Circle 11 and was followed by a limited open house tour and light refreshments in Circle 12. On May 23, 2013, the Palm Desert city council voted unanimously (5-0) to designate Sandpiper Condominiums Circles 11 and 12 an historic district.

The Sandpiper was constructed over an extended period of time from 1958 to 1969. As a result, the complex was built by a variety of builders, however, the style of the overall complex remains modernist. The different areas are referred to as “circles” and these various “circles” have unique characteristics and significance. Circles 11 & 12 were designed by Palmer & Krisel and consist of 16 buildings (32 units) and represent one of Palm Desert’s most intact examples of modernist architecture. Architectural features include flat roofs, expanses of glass and uses of concrete screen block as brise soleil.

Paul Kaplan Group Modernism Yard Sale

Crowds began showing up early and racking up the bargains this past Sunday as The Paul Kaplan Group along with Modern Bear sponsored the Modernism Yard Sale as a free Modernism Week event. Although the sale did not begin until 8:00 a.m., anxious buyers begin lining the perimeter up to an hour early in hopes of grabbing some good mid-century and modern deals. Everyone was offered free donuts and Koffi supplied free coffee for the duration of the sale.

Goods ranged from original art, books, records, furniture, and slightly experienced mid-century household items. Vendors came from as far away as Indiana and Arizona as well as all over Southern California. A photo booth was on hand to capture the moment as customers found the items they could not pass up.

The Modernism Yard Sale will return next October. Sign up for email notification on The Paul Kaplan Group website: As an official Modernism Week sponsor, The Paul Kaplan Group was also a sponsor of many of the events including the “A Taste of the Leisure Life” tour, the 6th annual Racquet Club Estates Home Tour and Reception, and the El Rancho Vista Estates Home Tour in addition to the Modernism Yard Sale.
